Familial and Household Structure in Vlandian Tribes.
Families in the Vlandian Kingdoms tend to be similar to other Western cultures, but with some key differences. For the Vlandian people, a family is not just a man, his wife, and their children, but it is an interlinking web of people, all united under the same idea of fellowship. For instance, in one home, you may not only find a man and his immediate family, but you may also find his elderly parents or some younger siblings. In addition, one physical family home is seldom one building, but rather a collection of a few buildings grouped together. Here, one may find the residence of three brothers and their wives and children, their elderly parents, and any other close family, such as aunts and uncles.
In Vlandian society, hospitality rights are a serious matter. If a man were to invite another man into his house, and then disrespect or bring him harm, that man would be subject to great social ostracism, as well as any legal punishments. Similarly, if a man is invited into someone’s home and then defiles his host’s household, be it physically or socially, it would be socially acceptable for his host to seek recompense, with blood if necessary. In addition, crossing the threshold into another family's home has great religious significance. When a bride is wed, she will cross the threshold, and kneel before the elder members of the family, typically the groom’s father and mother, and rise again, as part of her new family.
Each Vlandian family is part of a clan. United by the ruling family of noble birth, a clan can have six to eight separate families residing in the same village. When it comes to outside clans, these families are quick to rally behind their chief to defend their own. However, this does not mean tensions are always cool. If one family offends another, things could very easily boil over to open violence. Thus, it is typical for the head of the ruling family, typically the eldest male, to act as an arbitrator in such circumstances, in an effort to solve things more peaceably. Despite any differences these families may have, a Vlandian clan is unified, for if any dishonor were to come to the clan, it would be cast down on all the families in it.
